about the book

Anybody who finds themselves navigating grief and mourning tends to search for a guide of how to get through.

When the loss is sudden, tragic or traumatic it adds a deeper cruelty to this experience. This can be called disenfranchised grief or complex grief. It might be out of order (the loss of a child), from road trauma, workplace accidents, as a result of a natural disaster, or even the horrors of terrorism, missing person, suicide or homicide.

This book aims to take the concept of children’s books to an adult and young adult audience experiencing this complex grief. When everything needs to be simple because the world is now too complicated and yet you have a loved one that is no longer here and you have to keep living in the world. How?

You are introduced to grief processes that encourage continued bonds and challenges the sometimes unhelpful phrases you hear like “closure”.

Join the beautiful winged creature Ailis as he helps explain a way through by learning to fly.

Corinne Lindsell is a social worker with experience in the broad spectrum of the field including youth work, child protection, crisis counselling, disability services, policy development, worker wellbeing and mission engagement.

With particular interests in purpose driven leadership, grief and loss and environmental sustainability her main ethos is to leave a legacy for the betterment of each other.

Corinne and her family faced a traumatic event in 2017 which changed their lives forever with the tragic death of her brother Jeffrey.  Through this tragedy they were introduced to the Homicide Victims Support Group and have been navigating this new world ever since.

Learn to fly is Corinne’s first book, and is written to dispel the confusing dialogue out there about grief expectations… and challenges some of the accepted concepts.

“Of all of the books and resources that were given to me at the time, it was that childrens books on grief that seemed to stay with me… they were simple and beautiful… so I thought there needs to be this concept but for adults”.

"This book is so needed. This is a conversation about our permission to grieve. It is normalising human emotions and experiences, and provides hope to anyone who has been through trauma or who is hurting. Corinne lives and breathes healing, and now she’s sharing it with the community."
